Claim Jumper

Outstanding Salmon Oscar at Claim Jumper!  Grilled salmon fillet topped with jumbo lump crab meat, lemon butter and grilled asparagus spears.  Definitely one of the best seafood dishes I’ve enjoyed at CJ!

D’Carlos

Recently I took Lady FoodObs back to D’Carlos Restaurant to get one of their outstanding chocolate eclairs. I have to say, this is probably one of the best desserts I’ve ever put in my mouth! This thing is huge; roughly the size of a small slipper or moccasin (about a men’s size 8). It’s only $6 and is served with a knife so you can cut it in half to share with your Hunny. (Tip for the guys: always take the smaller half!)

The eclairs at D’Carlos are filled with some sort of cream/custard filling, and a lot of it! The whole thing is then blanketed with an excellent warm, thick and rich chocolate sauce. Almost like a ganache.

I think what set this apart for me was the temperature contrast. The cold cream filling combined with the warm chocolate sauce made for an amazing oral sensation!

Pinto Thai

Outstanding dinner recently at Pinto Thai! Crab Fried Rice for $13.99. Made with fried jasmine rice, fresh crab meat, egg, green & white onions, peas, carrots and tomatoes in their special sauce. I’m not exactly sure what was “special” about the sauce, but it was a very good fried rice dish.

This one did not have the traditional up front soy sauce flavor, it was more delicate and subdued. It did however have a great spicy note with unique, herbaceous and fresh tasting flavors. The consistency was on the drier side compared to most fried rice dishes I’ve had. You’ll find a liberal amount of crab throughout, although no lump meat! It mostly consisted of smaller bits of a more institutional, foodservice grade quality of crab. Fairly conservative amount of egg and green onion. Would have benefitted from more. For those of you who love cucs, Pinto garnishes most of their plates with several thick slices of cucumber. Acts as a nice cooling agent when you have a spicy dish.

This was a huge serving that could have been easily shared by two. I ate most of it and I’m pleased to report that it did not leave me feeling all bloated afterwards.

Sombrero Mexican Food

This is the “Special Burrito” at Sombrero’s, and what a marvel it is!  Your choice of beef or chicken with beans, rice and lettuce made into a huge burrito roughly the size of a small pillow.  The whole thing is then made totally amazing with a generous blanketing of their signature enchilada sauce and cheese.  I could eat this every day but would probably weigh 300 pounds…

Carnitas Tacos

Outstanding homemade carnitas tacos!  Our slow cooker pork shoulder yields so many amazing meals.

Ramona Lisa Pizza

Outstanding lasagna from Ramona Lisa recently. Always a favorite for pizza, it was time to branch out and try a pasta dish. Only $8.99, includes a big piece of garlic bread. This was the perfect take-out meal. Generous portion of classic lasagna goodness. Rich, thick and very meaty sauce. All the layers stayed fairly homogenous without turning into a hot mess.

Way Point Saloon

Outstanding dinner at Way Point Saloon! This place (includes UTHG) remains consistently in the top two burger spots of Ramona. While Gail continues to order her beloved “Mountain Man”, I always try to branch out to something different. This time I had “The Rancher”. Made simply with smoked cheddar, bacon, onion rings & BBQ sauce… That’s it! Only $12.95, includes side. It’s served open faced with a tower of onion rings stacked atop the hot, juicy beef patty. The whole thing is artfully drizzled with a decent BBQ sauce. I wound up having to eat most of the rings separately, leaving about one or two before I was able to construct the burger in a way I could actually pick it up. (Wish I had brought a change of clothes). This was actually perfect because I dearly adore both their beer battered fries and onion rings. Choosing fries as my side allowed me to enjoy both!

Outstanding service as always. Love all the great folks that keep WPS/UTHG humming.

Homemade Ramen

Recently made a kicked up homemade ramen thing that turned out pretty tasty!  Just start with one of those cheap grocery store ramen packs and add some cut up green onions, sprouts, sriracha, lime, etc.

Plaza Grill

The Plaza Grill at Barona Casino is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in the area!  They have a simple, yet diverse menu that would please most anyone.  I particularly enjoy the sushi made to order.

Boll Weevil

For some time I have proclaimed the Thursday night AYCE fish fry at the Weev to be the best value in town. Well, Boll Weevil has a solid lock on the number two spot as well. About once a month in the Ramona Sentinel you can get a coupon for their “Family Meal Deal”.  For only $24.99 you can stuff a hungry family of four with some great food. Includes two 1/2 lb super cheeseburgers; two 1/4 lb super cheeseburgers; and two huge baskets of fries. But wait, there’s more! You also get a tasty nacho appetizer to share. (Actually mom & dad eat most of it while the kids are playing games).

So, we typically get a specialty burger basket when visiting the Weev, but these basic “super cheeseburgers” are outstanding! It’s the same meat, cooked perfectly, with seeded, toasted bun. Comes standard with lettuce and tomato. On each table though is a “condiment tray” containing a myriad of toppings you can use to enhance your burgers. Onions, peppers, pickles, various squeeze bottles of random sauces and such.

Nacho appetizer is pretty basic but very good. (Pictured in the comments). Big basket of fresh, hot tortilla chips with a side of jalapeños and nacho cheese. That’s it. They use a pretty good quality cheese here. Not all institutional and watery.

Boll Weevil continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in Ramona for many reasons. Always friendly, welcoming, top shelf service. Their selection of BNS Brewing & Distilling Co. on draft is a big help too!
