Los Amigos

There is this phenomenon that occurs at many SoCal taco shops called creamy guacamole. Or guacamole Americano. Or as I like to call it, green mayonnaise. Anyway, a lot of people may scoff at it, but I’ve developed a fondness for it over the years. Especially good atop rolled tacos. For me, there is a time and a place for both the legit, chunky, guacamole Mexicano and this stuff.

Italian Mac & Cheese

Outstanding homemade Italian style mac & cheese! Made with cavatappi pasta, a ricotta/mozzarella bechamel and Italian sausage.

Marinade on Main

Lately I have been enjoying some great burgers in Ramona from some of our town’s well-known establishments/bars. Of all my visits to Marinade On Main though I’ve never tried their burger, until recently.

I ordered their “Signature Burger” and it was just outstanding! Farm raised chuck angus beef patty, cheddar, onion bacon jam, arugula, tomato, pickle and garlic aioli. Comes with hand-cut fries or pasta salad, $14.50. A farm fresh egg, avocado or bacon can be added to any burger or sandwich.

What stands out about this burger is its simplicity. The beef really shines through it all and it’s very clear to me that Marinade is using beef of a remarkable quality. From my understanding it’s a grass fed angus beef from a prairie farm in northern California.

The onion bacon jam is really good! Slightly sweet and smokey tasting. What comes on the burger was difficult for me to discern on its own so I’d recommend requesting some extra on the side.

Bun was an excellent bakery brioche style that was lightly toasted and stayed in tact throughout. Unfortunately the bun circumference was slightly larger than the beef patty. I like to see a more proportional bun/beef ratio.

Tremendous job from all the staff! I always see everyone working so hard and it’s very evident to me how much pride they take in the restaurant.

Mi Ranchito Taco Shop

One of the best things to order at Mi Ranchito are these outstanding flautas! Some of the best in town. Also tried a papa taco, (potato taco), or as I like to say, “tater taco”. Not one of the best things to order. Didn’t really care for the consistency of the potato. It seemed like pieces of mashed up, bland baked potato. I think if it were chunks of diced up, fried, crispy potato it would have been better. Certainly a beautiful looking taco though!

Ramona Lisa Pizza

Outstanding pizza and an unorthodox antipasto salad at Ra-Mona Lisa!

Way Point Saloon

Outstanding dinner recently at Way Point Saloon / Molly Malones / Up the Hill Grill / whatever you want to call it…

Probably one of the most remarkable burger creations in town, and my personal favorite, is the ‘Maple Bourbon Bacon Burger’. A half pound pure beef patty is seared on the grill then basted with a maple syrup/brown sugar/cayenne pepper/bourbon glaze. It all seeps into the meat while it finishes cooking and gets slightly caramelized on the edges. What sends this burger over the top has to be the mound of deep fried red onions & jalapeños! Outstanding flavor combinations and textures going on here.

There are a lot of great burgers around town but this one has always been a standout for me. Highly recommended.

Mi Ranchito Taco Shop

Outstanding order of rolled tacos recently from Mi Ranchito! Topped with a very tasty creamy guacamole Americano and a liberal amount of shredded cheese. All of it sitting on a bed of fresh looking, shredded iceberg lettuce. Order of 3 base price is $4.15; it wound up being $5 with tax and card fee.

Mi Ranchito rolled tacos are made with ground beef vice shredded beef. Although some may scoff, I actually prefer ground beef in my rolled tacos. Good clean bites every time. At some places the shredded beef is rolled too tightly and I’m always pulling out large slugs of meat with each bite, leaving an unfortunate hollow tortilla tube.

Typically a fan of the flautas at Mi Ranchito, I decided to try their rolled tacos and I’m glad I did!

Romano’s Macaroni Grill

One of the worst things I’ve eaten at Romano’s Macaroni Grill! The so-called “Classic Italian Bake”. Sadly it’s not even baked! Just a bunch of ingredients thrown in a baking dish. I’ve been a fan of many dishes at the Macaroni girl, this was not one of them.

Domino’s Pizza

Domino’s Pizza for dinner recently! Clearly the best thing coming out of their ovens is the pan pizza with thick, crispy, greasy edges. The unique flavor combination of alfredo sauce with chicken and bacon compliments this pan style beautifully.
