Players Sports Bar

Tasty “Loco Moco” at Players in Poway! A traditional Hawaiian dish of rice with an onion seasoned burger patty, smothered in gravy, topped with two eggs over easy and garnished with chives. This is such a unique dish that has been on my list to try for some time. When I ran across it on this sports bar menu, I could not resist. Glad I ordered it but it’s definitely a gut bomb.

Nuevo Grill & Cantina

Outstanding carne asada enchiladas at Nuevo Girl in Ramona! Biggest and best in town, that I can tell you!

Best Pizza & Brew

I’m back at Best Pizza & Brew in Carmel Mountain Ranch! This time to try a salad and mac & cheese. I really enjoy the open air feel here. Caesar salad was excellent. Properly dressed and cheesed. What stood out though were the exquisite croutons. Among the best I’ve had. Very nicely done for a Caesar.

The mac was pretty good. Better than the version I had recently at Stone. Added bacon and jalapeños which were abundant and nicely mixed in. I appreciated their use of cavatappi pasta (corkscrew). Cheese sauce was tasty and nicely proportioned; didn’t get all soupy. The jalaps should have been diced up a bit. They were whole, thick sliced coin shaped pieces.

Villa Capri Trattoria & Wine Bar

Exquisite “Tagliatelle Gamberi Mascarpone e Rucola” at Villa Capri in Poway! Fettuccine with shrimp in a mascarpone cream sauce with fresh arugula. We also had the “Linguine con Capesante e Gamberi”. Linguine with scallops, shrimp, diced tomatoes, served in a spicy light pink sauce. Such creative, beautiful and well executed Italian dishes here.

Tio Leo’s Mexican Restaurant

Excellent “Tio’s TJ Hot Dogs” at Tio Leo’s in Poway! Tasty all beef franks, wrapped in bacon topped with grilled onions, maters and jalaps. The only thing missing was a nice slather of mayonnaise!

Miguel’s Cocina

Outstanding “Pollo Asado Burrito” at Miguel’s in 4S Ranch! Marinated grilled chicken breast sautéed with salsa fresca, then rolled into a flour tortilla, topped with enchilada sauce, jalapeño white sauce, guacamole & cheese. Such an exciting kaleidoscope of textures and flavors!

Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens

A fairly pedestrian order of mac & cheese at Stone in Esco. Since mac & cheese is my favorite vegetable I’ve become a connoisseur. The bacon was too thin and haphazardly chopped. Just thrown on top without really being homogenous throughout the dish. I’m not sure it was even baked. Most dishes at Stone usually impress me but this one fell flat.

Phil’s BBQ

Excellent “El Toro” sandwich at Phil’s BBQ in Rancho Bernardo! A heaping mound of tender, flavorful deli sliced tri-tip, char-grilled and topped with BBQ sauce. It helps to eat about half the beef with a fork before attempting to pick up this behemoth.

Ramona Cafe

Outstanding Denver Omelet at Ramona Cafe! Among my favorite omelet styles to order at any restaurant, the Denver here is no slouch! Teeming with a mass of diced ham, onions and bell peppers, plus enough cheese to stop me up for a week. Although I prefer hashbrowns, the home fried taters here are very good. Especially when you add onions & peppers. Highly recommended for a great breakfast meal, served all day, whenever you’re in Old Town Ramona.

Sushi Kami

Sushi Kami is a cute little restaurant with great lunch specials. The parking lot however is terrible. It’s like crisis mode getting through it or even scoring a spot that you can get in to or out of. Not unusual for Rancho Bernardo in general. Since my office is just up the street I stop by occasionally. Everyone who works here are always so nice and welcoming. I’ve had some tasty susie rolls here but most often order the bulgogi beef or chicken teriyaki bowl lunch special. I recommend eating in if you get this. To-go orders gets the salad packed in the same box with hot food unfortunately.
