Smokin J’s BBQ

One of Poway’s newest restaurants, Smokin J’s is a BBQ powerhouse! Located near Old Poway Park, their small storefront puts out some of the best Que I’ve had in SoCal. I believe they’re in the process of expanding and will have ample dine in facilities soon. Everything here is made from scratch, in-house. I’ve had their brisket a couple times and it is excellent. Quite moist and richly marbled. They also make a delicious looking pecan pie (my fave) that I can’t wait to try soon!

Pioneer BBQ

(Visited December 26, 2019) Outstanding 2 Meat Combo at Pioneer BBQ! Cheddar sausage was excellent, brisket decent, mac & cheese nothing to write home about, and tater salad that was remarkably good.

Dyer’s BBQ

Back in Amarillo after a long day of driving! We originally intended to have dinner at The Big Texan but the wait was obscene. Instead we lucked out and had a great dinner at Dyer’s BBQ just down the road from our hotel. The Dyer family has been serving their family BBQ recipes in the Texas panhandle for over 50 years! I enjoyed a great combination plate that included brisket, jalapeño sausage, incredibly smooth tater salad, etc.

Prison Hill Brewing Company

Outstanding pulled pork poutine and two smoked meat plate at Prison Hill Brewing! This place is Yuma’s only craft brewery and serves some of the finest food I’ve had in downtown Yuma.

On the Border

I’m not sure if it’s still on their menu, but this brisket quesadilla is one of the best things I’ve put in my mouth at On the Border!

Kaminski’s BBQ & Sports Lounge

Kaminski’s Sport Lounge and BBQ is one of my favorite places to eat in Poway! I went all out and ordered one of their “Amazing Melt Sandwiches”. Choice of brisket, pork, salmon or chicken, topped with 3 cheese mac & cheese, caramelized onions on grilled sourdough with melted cheddar! Comes with your choice of side. I got the fries which you can get garlic style. I highly recommend those! They also have beans, tater salad, chips, slaw and what not.

Brisket was slightly dry, although still tasty with a good chew. Mac was decent, fries were hot & fresh. Garlic is a must! All this in sandwich form is something to behold. Kind of a hot mess but really delicious.

This place is super top shelf, modern, clean, etc. Outstanding, professional service too. Worth a visit if you’re ever in the Poway area.

Old Town BBQ

The Ramona Mainstage is now sporting a full bar AND Texas style BBQ restaurant! Had to check out both recently at Old Town Bar-B-Que which is an extension of The Maincourse Restaurant. There’s a very simple menu of all the standard BBQ favorites like brisket, ribs, tri-tip, chicken, etc. You can order a big checked paper lined tray of meats and sides, or in the sammich form factor. I ordered the half pound brisket dinner, includes two sides.

Brisket came out better than I was expecting. Fairly tender, nice smoke ring and flavor, about 1/4 inch slices. Enough to where you can taste the meat with good mouth feel and chew. All the meats here are rubbed and served naked. All saucing is done on the side which I appreciate.

The mac salad was outstanding. Made with bowtie pasta, finely chopped celery and bits of ham. It was a nice tight consistency, although could have used some more contrasting textures. Maybe some red onion or something like that.

The tater salad at first seemed to be more loose and overly dressed. I quickly grew to love it though! It’s filled with a liberal amount of smokey bacon chunks that made it super tasty. Other sides include slaw, baked beans, and corn on the cob, all made fresh in-house.

If you’re a BBQ fan, I highly recommend checking out Old Town Bar-B-Que inside Ramona Mainstage. Open Wednesday – Sunday, 11am – 9pm. I’ll definitely be back soon!

Jack in the Box

This so-called Brisket Burger at JIB was surprisingly good!

A&S Catering & BBQ

Another quick one! If you’ve never been to an event catered by A&S Catering&BBQ, you are missing out! At a recent charity auction I enjoyed some outstanding brisket. Tender, succulent and thick sliced. Also the best tater salad I’ve ever put it my mouth, that I can tell you!

Happy to have also tried Anthony’s famous macaroni & cheese (made with penne pasta). Comfort food at it’s finest! Adorned with a liberal amount of bacon, I could have just laid down in all of it. Times like this remind me why mac & cheese is my favorite vegetable!

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit

The new Dickey’s in Carmel Mountain Ranch is finally open!  Brisket was decent, tater salad was outstanding and the mac & cheese terrible.
