Harpoon Henry’s Seafood Restaurant

(Visited December 8, 2019) Excellent calamari appetizer at Harpoon Henry’s at Dana Point Harbor! I loved how it was prepared steak style and cut into strips. A nice change from the traditional rings, tubes and hideous spidery legs. Tasted really good and was accompanied by two delicious dipping sauces. In business since 1975, Harpoon Henry’s offers a spectacular waterfront view, fresh seafood, and the latest in California beach cuisine.

Outstanding calamari at Rock & Brews in El Segundo, CA!

The Quarterdeck Seafood Restaurant

Quite possibly the worst calamari I’ve ever put in my mouth! At The Quarterdeck Seafood Restaurant in Arroyo Grande, CA. From the outside, this place clearly used to be a Coco’s or Carrows. That should have been my first clue.

Yard House

Excellent fried calamari at Yard House in Palmdale, CA! I really appreciated the fact that the hideous spidery legs were kept to a minimum.

Ramona Lisa Pizza

I’m not sure if this was a geometric anomaly or they slipped in two slices from a bigger pizza. I’m pretty sure it was just unfortunate slippage. At any rate, another outstanding pizza from Ramona Lisa! That calamari though seems to be masquerading as onion rings. 😂

Claim Jumper

Outstanding wedge salad at CJ! They have one of the best happy hours in SoCal with a thoughtful collection of small plates.

The Par Lounge

I’ve been eating calamari at The Par Lounge for years. I’ve ridden the roller coaster of varying qualities they’ve put out. Sometimes excellent, sometimes it seemed like a bowling alley snack bar. The new menu at Par/OG features the outstanding appetizer “S&P Calamari”. By far, their best yet! $14 ($2 off during happy hour).

Super delicious and artfully presented, I easily and happily ate the whole thing. It’s adorned with beautifully blistered shishito peppers, roasted peanuts, fresh lime, etc. Includes sides of a tasty, sweet chili sauce and a savory peanut sauce. A very nice Asian inspired spin on calamari that’s not over the top.

Sombrero Mexican Food

My favorite place for “San Diego-Style” Mexican food is always Sombrero. For decades! Here are some of my absolute favorite Taco Tuesday selections. Fish taco and calamari taco. Made very simply with shredded cabbage, pico de gallo, chipotle crema and lime.

Pizza Nova

Another outstanding dinner at Pizza Nova in Point Loma! Here’s an excellent baked macaroni & cheese au gratin. Made with my favorite cavatappi pasta, cheddar and gruyere cheeses and bacon. All baked off in their wood burning oven. Also shown is one of the best orders of calamari I’ve had in SoCal. Love the dipping sauces!

Pizza Nova

Here I am again at the Pizza Nova located in the Point Loma area west of downtown San Diego.  Some of the finest calamari appetizers of most most places I’ve tried.  Here’s a great and light pasta dish called “Tomato Basil Angel Hair”, made with fresh maters, basil, garlic, olive oil, etc.  Add sautéed shrimps for a nominal fee.  Outstanding dinner that left me looking for a prone position.
