Descanso Beach Club

We visit Catalina Island annually and our must stop is always Descanso Beach Club! Often times each day for a nice early afternoon lunch. This is a private beach, open to the public. As such, adult beverages are welcome on the beach. The setting here is absolutely stunning. Situated just north of Avalon proper, it is a short walk past the Casino.
Food here is always top-shelf with a rotating menu of well thought out, beautifully presented beach fare. During our trip this week we tried “Tricia’s Nachos”. Loaded with carnitas, melted queso, cotija cheese, black beans (omitted), pico de gallo, jalapenos, sour cream and avocado puree, artfully drizzled. The quality of chips used here are excellent. What was immediately apparent was how good this nacho dish tasted after assuming room temperature. The food served on the 60 degree windy beach didn’t stay hot long. However they are making their queso very good. Tasted great cold.
Also tried the “Chicken Skewered Cobb Salad”. I always love a good Cobb salad. This one included the standard bacon, maters, avo, boiled egg, blue cheese and a delicious citrus vinaigrette. Unfortunately the greens consisted only of spinach leaves. No other type of lettuce. I didn’t really like that, especially with all the stems, etc. Kind of hard to eat and all the same leafy texture.
I highly recommend eating or visiting here at least once, even if just for a brief respite with a cold drink and glorious views. Just watch out for the hungry birds. They can be bold. There’s also a daily happy hour right now from 2-3pm. 2 tacos and margarita for $10. Great value considering their normal prices here. If you show up at 1:59 though, plan to wait.

Yesenia’s Mexican Food

Big, beautiful plate of carne asada chips at Yesenia’s in Carmel Mountain Ranch! Unfortunately the carne was just meh. Tasted like it was cooked the day before.

La Taqueria Jalisco Catering

La Taqueria Jalisco is an outstanding food truck (trailer) that makes frequent visits to numerous soirées around Ramona. I first tried them at a tap takeover at Reds, Whites & Brews. Had an excellent order of carne asada nachos and a plate of street tacos. I just loved all the delicious flavors of hot sauce they give you on the side!

Boll Weevil

For some time I have proclaimed the Thursday night AYCE fish fry at the Weev to be the best value in town. Well, Boll Weevil has a solid lock on the number two spot as well. About once a month in the Ramona Sentinel you can get a coupon for their “Family Meal Deal”.  For only $24.99 you can stuff a hungry family of four with some great food. Includes two 1/2 lb super cheeseburgers; two 1/4 lb super cheeseburgers; and two huge baskets of fries. But wait, there’s more! You also get a tasty nacho appetizer to share. (Actually mom & dad eat most of it while the kids are playing games).

So, we typically get a specialty burger basket when visiting the Weev, but these basic “super cheeseburgers” are outstanding! It’s the same meat, cooked perfectly, with seeded, toasted bun. Comes standard with lettuce and tomato. On each table though is a “condiment tray” containing a myriad of toppings you can use to enhance your burgers. Onions, peppers, pickles, various squeeze bottles of random sauces and such.

Nacho appetizer is pretty basic but very good. (Pictured in the comments). Big basket of fresh, hot tortilla chips with a side of jalapeños and nacho cheese. That’s it. They use a pretty good quality cheese here. Not all institutional and watery.

Boll Weevil continues to be one of my favorite restaurants in Ramona for many reasons. Always friendly, welcoming, top shelf service. Their selection of BNS Brewing & Distilling Co. on draft is a big help too!

BBQ Chicken Nachos

Outstanding homemade BBQ chicken Nachos!!  We’ve been lucky to find great, authentic tortilla chips in our local market from El Nopalito in Encinitas, CA.

El Taco Loco Shop

El Taco Loco Shop delivered by OrangeCrate. I’ll probably break this into a two part review since there’s a lot I’d like to deep dive about the food.

If you’ve ever eaten from El Taco Loco Shop (inside Ramona Market), you know it can be a somewhat awkward and cumbersome experience. From who do you talk to, to where do you order, how and when do you pay, etc. If all this stresses you out, then I’d recommend letting OrangeCrate do all the hard work for you.

Online ordering was painless and simple as always. Food arrived in less than the 60 minutes anticipated! One of the items we ordered were the flautas. Turns out they no longer sell them! Within minutes after ordering I had the MyOC dispatcher calling and texting me about picking an alternate choice. Their communications with me throughout were terrific.

Here’s an order of outstanding carne asada chips. It’s a huge amount that can easily be shared by two. This place definitely dishes up abundant portions of carne asada but I have to say the quality is not the best I’ve had in town. Not sure if they’re using an inferior quality flap meat, but there are significantly more oral extractions per capita here than any other taqueria in town.

As I’ve observed before, the best take-out food is probably Asian, followed closely by pizza. Next is probably Mexican. It held up very well on the 15 or so minute drive out to SDCE. Maybe the OC hotbox helped. Burgers and fries type dishes tend to struggle and are probably best eaten straight from the kitchen.
